Black +Decker 12-Cup Mill and Brew Coffee Maker

If you’re searching for a coffee maker with a built-in grinder but are low on funds, then look no further than the Black +Decker 12-Cup Mill and Brew. Despite the low-end price point, this appliance is full of high-end features.

Problems with this appliance are minimal, and the performance is mighty. Quite frankly, we're unsure how Black + Decker produced such a quality appliance for such a low cost.

Coffee beans start to lose their flavor as soon as they’ve been ground. So, if you want the most full-bodied flavor possible, it’s a good idea to grind your own beans immediately before brewing.

Buying a coffee maker with a built-in grinder is an excellent way of ensuring delicious fresh coffee. Today we’re going to go through our favorite six coffee makers with built-in grinders. We base our opinions on design, build quality, features, versatility, and value for money.

Let’s get started.

Specifications

  • Genre: Coffee Maker with Grinder
  • Dimensions: 12.5 x 8.5 x 16.3 inches
  • Appliance Weight: 16lbs
  • Capacity:  60oz
  • Material: Stainless Steel

Things To Love

  • Build-Quality & Appearance: This coffee maker is made from the highest quality materials, which bodes well for excellent appliance longevity. That quality transfers to the appearance of the Grind Control, which looks gorgeous.
  • 8 Strength Settings: Using settings 2 to 8, you can brew the weakest coffee strength (and it is feeble) up to a highly robust and full-flavored strength. Setting number 1 will allow you to brew pre-ground coffee in which you’ll control the potency by the quantity of grinds you put in.
  • Thermal Carafe: The Breville Grind Control is more than just a coffee maker with a grinder; it’s a thermal appliance too, which is far more energy-efficient than machines with warming plates.
  • ‘Steep & Release’: The steep and release function will give you single-serve coffee at the same strength and consistency as coffee that’s been brewed in a whole batch.
  • Countdown Timer: Found on the LCD, the countdown timer will inform you how it’s long going to be until your next coffee fix.

What’s Not To Like?

  • It’s Super Expensive: With the exception of the Cuisinart appliance (which we’ll look at later) the Breville Grind Control is over three times more expensive than all the other coffee makers.
  • High Maintenance: While the grinder works magnificently, it does require daily cleaning to ensure the stray coffee grounds don’t build up and cause issues further down the road.

Final Remarks

‘You get what you pay for,’ and if you’re willing to spend an enormous amount of money on the Breville Grind Control, then what you’ll get is one of the finest home coffee makers on the market.

The build quality is second-to-none, it looks incredible, and the number of features and benefits it has are too numerous for us to list today.

  • Appliance Weight: 9.5lbs
  • Capacity:  60oz
  • Material: Plastic, Glass
  • Available Colors: Black /Silver
  • Dishwasher Safe: Selected Parts

Things To Love

  • Value for Money: It’s almost unbelievable how affordable the Black + Decker Mill & Brew is. When you consider it has a built-in grinder and a 12-Cup capacity, you’d expect it to cost much more.
  • Brew Strength Selector: There are other ways to tinker with the taste of your coffee than just using the grinder. The brew strength selector lets you experiment with the regular, bold, and strong settings.
  • Auto-Brew & Shut-off: The 24-hour programmable timer lets you choose when your coffee is brewed, and it’ll automatically power down afterward, too.
  • ‘Sneak-a-Cup’: This feature is ‘pause and serve’ under a different name. The Black + Decker Mill & Brew will pause if you remove the carafe to ‘sneak-a-cup.’
  • Large Capacity: With a 12-Cup (60oz) capacity, this coffee maker holds a lot of coffee.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Initial Plastic Smell/Taste: It’s not uncommon for cheaper, brand new coffee makers to have a strong smell of plastic when you take them out of the box. Cleaning is essential before brewing coffee.
  • Replacement Carafe Not Available: If you’re unfortunate enough to break the carafe that comes with the Black + Decker Mill & Brew, the company does not sell a replacement part. So be careful.

Final Remarks

You’d be hard-pressed to find another coffee maker with a built-in grinder and large capacity for the super-low price point of the Black + Decker Mill & Brew. There’s the initial challenge of removing the plastic smell, and you’ll need to be careful with the carafe, but this money-saver is worth the effort.

  • Material: Glass, Stainless Steel, Plastic

Things To Love

  • It Looks Fantastic: The Krups brand has done an excellent job with the Personal Café coffee maker’s exterior appearance. We especially like the orange back-lit buttons.
  • Bold Brew Function: If you like a more robust tasting coffee, you’re able to get a concentrated brew at the touch of a button.
  • Brews Both Whole & Pre-Ground Beans: This coffee maker has settings that will either immediately brew the beans you’ve just ground or allow you to brew pre-ground beans.
  • Included Accessories: You get a few handy accessories with the Krups Personal Café coffee maker. A stainless-steel permanent filter, coffee scoop, and a cleaning brush.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Needs Cleaning with Every Use: This coffee maker needs cleaning with almost every use, specifically the grinder; otherwise, you’ll get problems with coffee build-up.
  • The Grinder is Exceptionally Loud: You don’t expect a grinder to be silent; however, this one is louder than most.
  • Carafe Drips When Pouring: You’ll need to be steady when pouring your coffee as the carafe that comes with this device is known to drip from the pour spout.

Final Remarks

While we really enjoy the overall aesthetic of the Krups Personal Café Grind Drip coffee maker  the functionality and features don’t quite match the appealing appearance. It’s not a bad coffee maker; but we feel it lacks in some areas. For the price point, other models have more to offer.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Price Point is Too High: Coffee makers with built-in burr grinders tend to be pricey, but we feel the cost of this appliance is far too high for what it brings to the table.
  • It Looks Like an Old Computer: Despite its relatively high price point, this coffee maker looks like it was cobbled together from bits of old PC towers. It looks very dated.
  • Grinder is Loud & Slow: If it wasn’t bad enough that the grinder is so loud it could burst an eardrum, it also takes a while to grind the beans.

Final Remarks

If you can overlook the dreadful appearance, loud grinder, and the relatively high price point of the Capresso 464.05 Coffee Team GS Coffee Maker, it could be worth considering. This appliance is simple to use, entirely programmable and makes amazing coffee.

Things To Love

  • Unique Appearance: The Chefman Grind & Brew is a coffee maker that looks like no other. It has a style of its own which we think is fantastic.
  • It Can Brew Unground Coffee: You’re not limited to using only whole beans as this coffee maker can be set to brew without grinding.
  • Removable Grind Basket: Built-in grinders can typically be a pain to clean, but the basket on this appliance is removable, which is supposed to make life much easier.
  • One-Touch Operation: Brewing is made easy with this coffee maker, set the dial to the amount of coffee you want to grind (or choose ‘grounds’ for pre-ground coffee), and press the start button. Simple.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Not the Hottest Coffee: While the coffee that comes out of this appliance is by no means cold, it might not be hot enough for those coffee drinkers who like their morning Joe steaming hot.
  • Challenging to Clean: Despite the inclusion of a removable grind basket, this coffee maker is still a pain to clean, and you’ll have to clean it after each use, or the grinder will likely clog up.
  • It’s a Bit Small: When you go through the process of grinding your own beans, it’d be ideal to be able to brew more coffee. And while we understand this is a compact device, you’ll be grinding (and cleaning) more often.

Final Remarks

We love the appearance of this coffee maker, and it makes delicious (but not overly hot) coffee. It’s suitable for single people and occasional coffee drinkers, but be prepared to clean this appliance, and often.

Overall Score:  13.5/20

Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew Thermal 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker
  • 24-hour fully programmable coffeemaker with auto shutoff, brew-pause feature, and Grind off function
  • Double-wall insulated stainless steel thermal carafe with comfort grip handle holds up to 12 cups of coffee
  • Built-in automatic burr grinder and 8-ounce bean hopper holds a half pound of beans. Strength selector and grind control fine-tune intensity and volume

Specifications

  • Genre: Drip with Grinder
  • Dimensions: 19.96 x 32.27 x 40.28 inches
  • Appliance Weight: 14.96lbs
  • Capacity:  12-Cup
  • Material: Stainless Steel, Plastic
  • Available Colors: Stainless Steel
  • Dishwasher Safe: No

Things To Love

  • Adjustable Burr Grinder with ‘Grind-off’: The coffee grinder built into the Cuisinart Grind & Brew is adjustable, giving you the ability to grind beans from ‘fine’ to ‘coarse.’ Alternatively, you can switch the grinder off and use pre-ground beans.
  • Thermal Carafe: Keep your coffee warming for longer with this double-walled thermal carafe.
  • Multiple Features: Cup size selection, programmable timer, brew-strength selector, and brew-pause are just some of the features of this coffee maker.
  • Accessories: The Cuisinart Grind & Brew comes with multiple accessories. In the box, you’ll find a permanent gold tone filter, a charcoal water filter, and a coffee measuring scoop.

What’s Not To Like?

  • The Ludicrously High Price Tag: Excluding commercial-grade coffee makers, there aren’t many coffee making appliances with a higher price point than the Cuisinart Grind & Brew.
  • It’s High Maintenance: Because the grinder is positioned directly above the water tank, steam rises into the grinder and causes coffee grounds to stick to the inside. You’ll have to clean it out after every use. The grinder is overly loud too.
  • Tiny LCD: The timer display on this coffee maker is so small you’ll struggle to read it, especially if you don’t have the best eyesight.
  • Carafe Drips when Pouring Coffee: A leaky carafe is a common problem in the coffee maker industry; unfortunately, the Grind & Brew is afflicted with this issue.

Final Remarks

This is an excellent Cuisinart coffee maker. Yes, it has some issues, but most appliances do; unfortunately, the price point is so ridiculously high that these problems appear magnified. It’s difficult to justify the expense.
