Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffee Maker

Zojirushi is better known for manufacturing excellent rice cookers; however, their coffee makers are every bit as good. Their products' appearance is relatively bland; however, the 5-Cup Zutto coffee maker's engineering ensures this appliance consistently delivers delicious coffee.

Designed with a minimalistic approach, this coffee maker is incredibly simple to use. It is super compact (thanks in part to an internal filter cone built into the carafe) and is perfect for smaller kitchens.

Specifications

  • Genre: Small / Drip
  • Dimensions: 6 x 9 x 11 inches

  • Capacity:  5-Cup
  • Material: Plastic
  • Available Colors: Black / Stainless Steel

Things To Love

  • It Makes Excellent Coffee: This coffee maker makes a fantastic and consistent brew for such a small appliance.
  • Internal Carafe Filter Cone: To ensure the footprint of this coffee maker is kept to a minimum, Zojirushi has fitted the coffee filter cone inside the carafe, instead of it taking up room in the central unit.
  • Removable Water Tank: The reservoir for this appliance slides out to make it easy to fill; it also has measurement markings for hot and iced coffee.
  • Charcoal Water Filter: A water filter is fixed to the showerhead to remove your water’s impurities for a smoother tasting brew. Zojirushi claims the filter will last for up to two years with ‘normal use.’
  • Automatic ‘Keep Warm’ Function: The auto-warm feature will kick in as soon as your coffee has finished brewing to ensure your beverage is piping hot when you’re ready to drink it.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Looks Cheap: While the appearance of an appliance doesn’t negatively impact the taste of your coffee, the materials used to produce the Zutto 5-Cup look bland and unappealing.
  • Plastic Odor: As a result of the cheap plastic used to make this coffee maker, there’s a strong plastic smell when you first take it out of the box. We advise running two or three hot water cycles through the machine before attempting to make coffee.

Final Remarks

Zojirushi Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffee Maker doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. This coffee maker knows the job it’s been designed to do, and it performs admirably making fantastic coffee. It is one of the pricier small coffee makers, but it’s trustworthy and dependable despite its cheap appearance.

Overall Score: 15.5/20

Things To Love

  • Simplicity: There’s little chance of making a mistake when you’re using this coffee maker because this appliance is so easy to use. Everything has been made as easy as possible.
  • Easy to Fill: The water reservoir is super simple to fill. Access to the tank is granted through a large lid, which gives you plenty of room to pour. There’s a water level marker in there, too, that informs you how many cups you’ve poured in.
  • 24-Hour Programmable Timer: Have a pot full of coffee waiting for you, no matter what time you wake up
  • Keep Warm & Auto Shut-off: If you’re not quite ready for a brew, the Capresso 5-Cup Mini will keep your coffee warm for up to two hours, after which, it will turn itself off.
  • Drip Stop: At the flick of a switch, you can pause the brew cycle, pour yourself a cup of coffee, then flick it back to resume the brewing process.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Initial Plastic Taste: Right out of the box, the Capresso 5-Cup Mini has a plastic taste when you brew a coffee, so it’s worthwhile brewing a few carafes of hot water before advancing to coffee.
  • Water Drips from Tank Lid: A slight gap between the lid on the water reservoir causes condensation to drip down the back of the appliance onto your countertops when the top is open.

Final Remarks

Capresso’s offering to the small coffee maker niche is a reasonably attractive appliance; its simplistic operation and design is a joy to use. Yes, there are a couple of minor issues with the 5-Cup Mini, but they don’t make the taste of your coffee any worse.

Things To Love

  • Super Affordable: Krups have managed to produce a quality small coffee maker while keeping the price low.
  • Attractive Appearance: Despite the exceedingly low price point for this appliance, the Krups ‘Simply Brew’ coffee maker is a good-looking device that will complement any kitchen.
  • ‘Pause & Serve’: If you’re an impatient person who can’t wait until the ‘Simply Brew’ coffee maker has finished brewing, the pause & serve feature allows you to pour a cup mid-cycle.
  • Auto Keep Warm: This coffee maker has an automatic feature that will keep your coffee warm after it’s finished brewing.

What’s Not To Like?

  • No Auto Shut-off: You’ll be required to power down this appliance yourself as there is no auto-off function, which is usually industry standard these days.
  • Carafe Drips When Pouring: Many coffee makers struggle with carafe pour spouts that drip coffee when pouring. Unfortunately, this appliance is one of them.
  • Brittle Filter: Krups supply a permanent coffee filter with this appliance; however, it’s cheaply made and somewhat fragile. So be careful when cleaning it.

Final Remarks

This Krups coffee maker is one of the cheaper appliances on the market, so some concessions will need to be made. The omission of an automatic off switch is disappointing, and the machine can be challenging to fill with water. Still, this is a decent coffee maker at a super affordable price point.

Specifications

  • Genre: Small / Drip
  • Dimensions: 7.25 x 8.2 x 10.75 inches
  • Appliance Weight: 1.79lbs
  • Capacity:  5-Cup
  • Material: Plastic
  • Available Colors: Black
  • Dishwasher Safe: Selected Parts

Things To Love

  • It’s the Most Affordable Coffee Maker on the Market: This plucky little appliance has, by quite some distance, the lowest price point of all the coffee makers we’ve looked at today. It costs less than four or five takeaway coffees would, from any large chain of coffee chops.
  • ‘Ergonomic Carafe’: Black + Decker has supplied, what they call, an ‘ergonomic carafe’ with this appliance. The specially designed handle makes it comfortable to use, more so for those people with weaker hands.
  • ‘Sneak-a-Cup’: This coffee maker has a ‘pause & serve’ feature with a fun-loving name.
  • Permanent Filter: Despite its low price point, Black + Decker has still managed to supply a permanent filter with the coffee maker, so you won’t need to buy expensive disposable ones.

What’s Not To Like?

  • It Looks & Feels Cheap: There’s no denying that Black + Decker has produced a decent coffee maker for the lowest price possible; unfortunately, it looks as though it’s the cheapest appliance on the market too.
  • The Lid Warps: The lid for the brew basket and water tank is a little clunky and cheaply made. Consumers report that it may warp over time, making it difficult to close.
  • No Auto Shut-off: Remember to switch this appliance off after use, as Black + Decker won’t do it for you.
  • Fragile Carafe: When you produce a cheap product, you have to use cheap materials, as a result, the carafe that accompanies the Black + Decker 5-Cup coffee maker is fragile, so you’ll need to be careful with it.

Final Remarks:

The Black + Decker 5-Cup coffee maker is a zero-risk appliance. Yes, it has some issues/annoyances and won’t make large batches of amazing Joe, but come on, it costs less than a week’s worth of beverages from a large coffee shop. It’s small and makes coffee that tastes good. What more could you ask for?

Overall Score: 12.5/20

5. Mr. Coffee 5 Cup Programmable Mini Coffee Maker

Mr. Coffee 5 Cup Programmable 25 oz. Mini, Brew Now or Later, with Water Filtration and Nylon Reusable Filter, Coffee Maker, Black
  • Compact design that fits nicely into small spaces
  • Brew later feature allows you to set your coffeemaker ahead and wake up to fresh brewed coffee
  • Ergonomic carafe designed for easy pouring and handling with ounces markings for better measuring

Disclosure: we may receive commissions from purchases made via our links at no additional costs to you.

Specifications

  • Genre: Small / Drip
  • Dimensions: 9.65 x 7.1 x 10.63 inches
  • Appliance Weight: 3.59lbs
  • Capacity:  5-Cup
  • Material: Nylon
  • Available Colors: Black
  • Dishwasher Safe: Selected Parts

Things To Love

  • ‘Brew Later’: Affordable, small coffee makers rarely come with a programmable timer, so it’s refreshing to see this Mr. Coffee appliance offers a ‘Brew Later’ option.
  • ‘Grab-a-Cup’: This function is yet another brew-pause feature with a fancy name.
  • It Looks Great: The Mr. Coffee 5-Cup programmable coffee maker has ideas above its station. The price point is cheap and cheerful, but there are few better-looking appliances in this price range.
  • Permanent Filter: You get a permanent filter with this appliance to help save money on disposable filters.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Challenging To Fill For Left-Handers: For reasons unknown, the hinge for the lid of the appliance is situated on the left-hand-side of the machine, so you can only fill it from the right (unless you turn the whole thing around), so if you’re left-handed this could prove challenging.
  • You’ll Find Some Sediment in Your Coffee: Very few cheap appliances can eliminate coffee sediment finding its way into the carafe, but this one is a fraction worse than average.
  • Water Level Window Inconveniently Placed: The window that shows how much water is in the coffee maker is round the back and not easy to see without moving the appliance.
  • Auto Shut-off Clocks off Early: Mr. Coffee claims this appliance will switch itself off after two hours of inactivity, but consumers report it’s much earlier than that, so don’t expect warm coffee all day.

Final Remarks

If the Mr. Coffee design team had put just a little more thought into this appliance’s design, it could have been right up there with the best models in the small coffee maker category. Unfortunately, despite a low price point and some great features, this coffee maker has been let down by easily solved issues.

Specifications

  • Appliance Weight: 5lbs
  • Capacity:  5-Cup
  • Material: Stainless-Steel, Plastic
  • Available Colors: Stainless-Steel
  • Dishwasher Safe: Selected Parts

Things To Love

  • It Makes Superb Coffee: There aren’t many small coffee appliances that make a more superior cup of coffee than the Bonavita 5-Cup Thermal coffee maker.
  • Thermal Carafe: This coffee maker is the only appliance on our list that features a thermal carafe. Thermal carafes are excellent at keeping your coffee warm for more extended periods without the need for power.
  • Pre-Infusion: The pre-infusion function will briefly soak your coffee grounds before starting the brewing process to ensure the entire filter has an even amount of water passing through it to make the most of your coffee grounds.
  • Minimalism: If there’s a more easy to use coffee maker on the market, then we’re yet to see it. Flick a switch, and away you go.
  • Purpose Built Shower Head: The shower head for this appliance has been designed specifically with smaller coffee batches in mind.

What’s Not To Like?

  • Possible Longevity Issues: While the problems with reliability and durability are not widespread, there are enough consumer complaints to cause a little concern. It appears to be the luck of the draw on whether you get a unit that will fail within a year or two.
  • Massively Expensive: This coffee maker is easily the most expensive appliance we’ve looked at today. By a large margin.

Final Remarks

If it weren’t for the possible longevity issues, the Bonavita 5-Cup Thermal coffee maker would be amongst our favorite small kitchen appliances. But the massive price tag and the potential for it breaking down after a year or two knocks a few points from the scoreboard.
