Its simplicity/ease of use is a masterclass in the art of less is more. You can't get the brewing process wrong with this coffee maker.

It is a little expensive compared to similarly sized coffee makers from other brands, and the glass carafe is on the brittle side, but it is capable of making an excellent cup of Joe. You can't get the brewing process wrong with this coffee maker.

The simplistic design of the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker sets it apart from other appliances in a similar price range. Whether that’s a good thing is down to your personal preferences.

There is only one button, just one, on the entire appliance, which leaves little to the imagination.

A large majority of the central unit is made from brushed stainless-steel for that professional coffee shop look, though the matte black plastic does look a little on the cheap side.

Overall, this coffee maker has a pleasing, traditional coffee maker appearance that will slot seamlessly into almost any kitchen or office space.

Bonvita has fitted this thermal coffee maker with an 8-cup capacity water reservoir, which holds approximately 40oz of water, equating to around four to five mugs of morning Joe for the average coffee drinker.

The reservoir is made from transparent plastic and has a large lid that extends fully to ensure adding water to this appliance is as convenient as it is simple. The tank has clear measurement markings in both ‘cups’ and ‘liters,’ so you know exactly how much water is in the unit.

  • Thermal Carafe: The double-walled thermal carafe will keep your coffee warm for up to four hours. This will not only cut down on waste, but it also uses less energy than would an appliance with a warming plate.
  • Wide Shower Head: Fitted with a wide showerhead, the Bonavita thermal coffee maker ensures water is evenly distributed across all the coffee grounds for a smooth, full-bodied taste.
  • Pre-Infusion: The pre-infusion function will briefly soak your coffee grounds before starting the  brewing process to ensure the entire filter has an even amount of water passing through it to make the most of your coffee grounds.
  • Auto Shut-off: The Bonavita 8-Cup Thermal coffee maker will automatically turn itself off 40 minutes after the last use, helping save on your power bill.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

There is no other appliance on the market that is simpler to use than the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker. Besides setting the pre-infusion feature (that you only have to do once), your coffee will be brewed at the push of a single button.

Of course, the lack of a control panel and/or timer means there is no pre-programming, so you’ll have to wait for your morning coffee. Fortunately, the brew time is reasonably swift, and this coffee maker can brew a full carafe in a little over five minutes.

Both the water reservoir/lid and the filter basket are well made and slide and clip purposefully into place.

This particular coffee maker doesn’t come with a permanent filter, so you’ll need to figure in the added expense of buying disposable filters before making a purchase.

Unfortunately, there appears to be some reliability issues with the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker, with a concerning number of consumers reporting poor longevity with this appliance. It does seem to be the luck of the draw as to whether you’ll receive a faulty unit that eventually stops working, as a majority of customers don’t have this problem, but there is enough to cause a little concern.

Cleaning this device is relatively easy as the filter basket, shower head, and carafe lid are all dishwasher safe. The carafe itself is not fit to clean in a dishwasher, but it’s not a major hassle to wash by hand.

Should you buy the Bonavita 8-Cup Thermal Coffee Maker (BV1900TS)?

While the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker is an excellent appliance, when it works, the relatively high price point and possible reliability issues make it difficult to recommend this particular model.

If you like the minimalist aesthetic and application, it might be worth considering one of the other Bonavita models, or maybe another brand entirely.

The outward appearance of the Bonavita Metropolitan is very similar to the Thermal coffee maker out of the same house. It has the same footprint, compact design, and overall aesthetic.

Though the Metropolitan’s central unit is manufactured from a black plastic that diminishes the appeal somewhat compared to the Thermal coffee maker, this helps reduce the appliance’s cost.

A glass carafe replaces the stainless-steel thermal container of its big brother, and it looks a little unimaginative, not to mention fragile.

With an 8-Cup capacity, the Bonavita Metropolitan offers the same 40oz water reservoir as the thermal version. The design is almost identical, except that a darker plastic was used to match the aesthetic of this appliance.

Expect around four average-sized cups of coffee per full brew cycle from this appliance.

  • Notification Alarm: A simple alarm will let you know as soon as your coffee has finished brewing.
  • Warming Plate: In the absence of a thermal carafe, the Bonavita Metropolitan will keep your coffee warming via a heat plate directly under the glass carafe.
  • Pre-Infusion: Holding down the power button for a couple of seconds will set the coffee maker to pre-infuse your grounds every time you use it.
  • Auto-Off: This safety feature will shut the coffee maker off 40 minutes after its last use.
  • Wide Shower Head: Using the same component found in the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker, the wide shower evenly spreads water throughout the filter to make the most of your coffee beans.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

The Metropolitan has the same ease of use as the Bonavita Thermal coffee maker; in fact, all the standard features are the same, with added extras to compensate for the glass carafe. So, it’s ridiculously straightforward to use.

Bonavita claims the brew time for a full carafe will take six minutes, but it can take seven minutes or more in our experience.

The build quality for the central unit appears to be better as there are significantly fewer consumer complaints surrounding this coffee maker’s longevity. However, numerous customers have spoken out regarding the fragility of the carafe. In what we can only assume was a cost-cutting measure, the carafe glass is thin, and is extraordinarily fragile and will crack/break easily.

All removable parts are dishwasher safe for ease of cleaning, but again, be extra careful with your carafe.

Should you buy the Bonavita 8-Cup Metropolitan Coffee Maker (BV1901PW)?

The Bonavita Metropolitan coffee maker is markedly more affordable than its thermal cousin, thanks in part to the glass carafe. Though it appears Bonavita cut costs too much in its production, resulting in the carafe being extremely fragile.

This spartan coffee maker makes an excellent cup of coffee thanks to its no-nonsense design, though, for its capacity size, it’s a little more expensive than you would hope when compared with other brands.

3. Bonavita 5-Cup Thermal (BV1500TS)

Best Bonavita Small Coffee Maker
Bonavita 5-Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker Featuring Thermal Carafe, BV1500TS
  • One-touch brew operation with auto-off
  • Powerful and precise 1100-watt heater maintains optimal brewing temperature of 198°-205°F (92°-96°C)
  • Optional pre-infusion mode saturates freshly roasted ground coffee to allow degassing before brewing

  • Minimalistic
  • Compact Design
  • Thermal Carafe
  • Good for Single People

  • Expensive
  • Reliability Issues

  • Genre: Small/Thermal
  • Dimensions: 12.3 x 6.2 x 10.6 inches
  • Appliance Weight: 5lbs
  • Capacity:  5-Cup
  • Material: Stainless-Steel, Plastic
  • Available Colors: Stainless-Steel
  • Dishwasher Safe: Selected Parts

Bonavita has very specific DNA when it comes to the design of their coffee makers, as the differences between the appliances is so subtle (size difference aside, obviously), you might not notice them if we didn’t point them out.

The basic layout is almost identical to the 8-Cup version; the water tank, heating element, and showerhead are all found in the same place. The central unit is finished in a decent quality brushed stainless-steel.

However, the filter basket is connected to the carafe rather than to the appliance’s main body. After every brew cycle, you’ll need to remove the carafe, disconnect the filter basket, and then apply the container lid before pouring yourself a coffee.

A 5-Cup (or around 25oz) capacity makes this small coffee maker more suited to single people or occasional coffee drinkers. The ‘5-Cups’ will produce approximately two or three standard-sized cups of coffee. So, if you’re the kind of person who regularly drinks more than one cup of coffee before leaving the house, a lower capacity such as this might work well for you.

The reservoir is a scaled-down version of the tank found on the 8-Cup Thermal coffee maker, though the water level markings are only listed in cups and not ounces.

  • Thermal Carafe: The thermal carafe has been designed with an attachable lid to keep your coffee warm for up to four hours after brewing.
  • Pre-Infusion: Bonavita now installs the pre-infusion feature to its appliances as standard.
  • Purpose Built Shower Head: The shower head for this appliance has been designed specifically with smaller coffee batches in mind.
  • Auto-Off: The Bonavita 5-Cup coffee maker will automatically switch itself off 40 minutes after a brew cycle to save on power and ensure consumer safety.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

As this thermal coffee maker shares the Bonavita DNA, it also shares the simplicity and minimalism of all the appliances we’ve looked at today.

Usually, when a product has a simplified design, it has the added benefit of having fewer components that can go wrong. Unfortunately for Bonavita, it seems its two thermal appliances both suffer from the same longevity issues, and unit failure is not uncommon.

On the plus side, the simplicity of this coffee maker’s design makes it incredibly easy to clean as the showerhead, filter basket, and carafe lid are dishwasher safe. However, the carafe itself will need to be cleaned by hand with a non-abrasive sponge and warm water.

Should you buy the Bonavita 5-Cup Thermal Coffee Maker (BV1500TS)?

If you’re looking for an appliance that is minimalistic, very easy to use, and makes fantastic coffee, the Bonavita 5-Cup Thermal coffee might seem like the coffee maker for you on the face of it.

However, it’s relatively expensive for a coffee maker of this size and has been known to suffer from similar reliability issues as its big brother, making it less than sufficient value for money.
