Bunn GRB Velocity Home Coffee Brewer

All three Bunn appliances in this article have many similarities, but the one trait they all share is that they make great coffee. While the GRB Velocity is probably the least attractive Bunn coffee maker, we do feel it represents the best value for money with its far lower price point.

It does have a baffling initial set-up, and if you want a full carafe of coffee in under three minutes, you'll need to be open to leaving this machine left switched on all of the time. If that's not a problem, then this GRB Velocity is an excellent choice of coffee maker.

Bunn appliances have a very distinct appearance when compared with other, more traditional coffee makers.

The Bunn GRB Velocity Brewer has an almost industrial aesthetic thanks mainly to the enormous red on/off switch, which is reminiscent of a component you might find on heavy machinery or power tools.

The entire appliance is a large rectangular unit and will take up plenty of real estate on your countertops and work surfaces, in both height and depth.

Bunn has gone with a minimalistic approach to the design but has still achieved a relatively pleasing outcome.

A stainless-steel 50oz internal water reservoir is listed as producing ten cups of coffee, but as always, that’s based on a 5oz cup, which is rarely enough. An average morning coffee in American is around 8-10oz, so you’ll get closer to five or six mugs in one full batch.

You’ll find access to the water tank on top of the coffee maker at the front, where you can pour the water into a large opening, which makes it incredibly easy to fill.

After the initial set-up, Bunn GRB Velocity will brew the same amount of water you pour into this coffee maker.

  • Internal Hot Water Tank: The hot water tank on the Bunn GRB Velocity coffee maker is powered independently of the rest of the unit and, if left switched on, can help brew a full batch of coffee in three minutes.
  • Multi-Stream Showerhead: This showerhead will spread water evenly across all the grounds in the brew basket to make the most of your coffee beans.
  • Drip-Free Carafe: Fitted with a unique carafe spout, Bunn promises this coffee maker is one of the few appliances with a no-drip carafe that works.
  • Continuous Warming Plate: Your coffee will be hot until you switch off this appliance thanks to the constant warming plate.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

Everyday use of the Bunn GRB Velocity coffee maker is incredibly simple. It has one enormous switch that you flip to brew your coffee. The coffee it produces is delicious, and this appliance can brew a full carafe in under three minutes. Kind of.

The simplicity of the design is offset by an overly complicated set-up procedure that you’ll need to go through for the Velocity coffee maker to be able to brew coffee in ‘under three minutes.’ Side note: If you don’t follow Bunn’s instructions to the letter, they say you’ll permanently damage the appliance and void the warranty.

We won’t go into the finer details of the set-up as it’s quite extensive (we recommend YouTube tutorials for precise instructions); however, the 3 minute brew time is only possible if the internal heated water tank has been switched on for at least 15 minutes.

So, you have two options; either keep the coffee maker continuously switched on to take advantage of the three-minute brew time, or wait near 20 minutes to brew a full carafe of coffee.

Both the carafe and brew basket are dishwasher safe and are straightforward to clean.

Should you buy the Bunn GRB Velocity Home Coffee Brewer?

Once you’ve got past the initial set-up of the internal heated water reservoir, what you’re left with is a reasonably priced appliance that can make delicious coffee in three minutes (if you’re prepared to leave the tank continuously switched off).

If an industrial-looking coffee maker that’s suited to heavy use is something that appeals to you, this one is definitely worth your consideration.

  • Appliance Weight: 8.4lbs
  • Capacity:  50oz
  • Material: Stainless Steel, Plastic
  • Available Colors: Stainless Steel

If the Bunn Velocity coffee maker is a heavy-duty power tool, then the Speed Brew Platinum is a sparkling black cocktail dress. Bunn has ditched the industrious aesthetic and opted for a more fashionable look, which is more suited to contemporary kitchens.

Made predominantly from black plastic, with sporadic splashes of stainless-steel and silver, the Speed Brew Platinum is an extremely sleek coffee maker. The carafe, water tank, and even the brew basket handle have a certain quality appeal, and even the Bunn logo oozes class.

The Bunn Speed Brew Platinum is equipped with the same style water reservoir, and has the same capacity as the Velocity. So, this coffee maker has a 10-cup capacity, capable of brewing five of six cups of coffee per full carafe.

As it has the same capacity and internal heated water tank, it’s also fitted with the same lid, which is large and accessible, making it straightforward to fill with water.

  • Double-Walled Thermal Carafe: A double-walled vacuum insulated thermal carafe will keep your coffee warm for up to two hours without the need for a warming plate.
  • Internal Hot Water Tank: This coffee maker has the same internal heated water reservoir as the Bunn Velocity, which can theoretically help brew a full 50oz carafe in three minutes.
  • Unique Showerhead: A specially designed showerhead ensures the Bunn Speed Brew an even water distribution and excellent coffee extraction.
  • Temperature Regulated Water Tank: This coffee maker holds a consistent water temperature that ensures a brew with a consistently full-bodied flavor.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

As this coffee maker is a thermal version of the Bunn Velocity, the Speed Brew Platinum has very similar ease of use, internal workings, and build quality as its big brother.

It also has the bizarre heating and water reservoir system that requires you to fill the tank before use, then later add the amount of water you want to brew into the carafe. You need to be committed to either leaving this appliance switched on constantly to reap the benefits of a “4-minute brewing time” or switch the coffee maker on ahead of time.

There is no programmable timer either, so you’ll have to remember to switch it on in the morning, a good 20 minutes before you want a coffee.

But when all’s said and done, the Bunn Speed Brew makes an excellent cup of coffee.

The removable parts have well-designed shapes that are dishwasher safe, so cleaning is very straightforward.

Should you buy the Bunn Speed Brew Platinum Thermal Coffee Maker?

If you’re choosing between Bunn coffee makers, then your main decisions to make are whether you want the best thermal coffee maker and/or personal preferences regarding appearance.

Or, if you have to take your budget into account, the Speed Brew Platinum is noticeably more expensive than the Velocity or the Speed Brew High Altitude, presumably due to the thermal carafe.

Even though all the Bunn coffee makers we’ve looked at today have a very distinct and similar appearance, the Speed Brew High Altitude coffee maker is our favorite of them all.

It has a sleek, almost stealthy look thanks to the matte black plastic exterior. The silver trim that features on the Speed Brew Premium coffee maker has been replaced on this appliance with a black gloss trim that makes it look even more stealth and almost intimidating.

The silver Bunn logo on the top of the appliance and the white logo on the carafe (particularly when it’s full of coffee) really stand out and catch the eye.

Because the water capacity, reservoir access, and internal heating tank on this coffee maker are almost identical to both appliances we’ve already looked at, we won’t bore you by going over the finer details for a third time.

Just know that this coffee maker will brew you around five or six conventional mugs of coffee, is easy to fill with water, and has a complicated internal system.

  • High Altitude Brewing: This Bunn coffee maker is designed to function at high altitude, giving those consumers who live at altitude a more optimal brewing experience than they’d get with a traditional model.
  • Drip-Free Carafe: Few coffee maker carafes can boast a drip-free carafe; Bunn has developed a drip-free spout that will keep your countertop clean.
  • Heated Internal Water Tank: All Bunn coffee makers in this article have a similar heated water tank that keeps water continuously hot for improved brewing speed.
  • Specifically Designed Showerhead: This Bunn coffee maker makes the most of your coffee grounds with a unique showerhead that distributes water evenly to ensure all your beans have the same saturation.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

Bunn produce quality coffee makers that have excellent build quality and superb longevity. This particular model is no different. It’s a fantastic unit made from strong materials that form a dependable appliance and delivers delicious coffee.

As with the other two models in this article, the Speed Brew High Altitude coffee maker’s general use is remarkably straightforward; that is, once you get past the initial set-up phase.

Again, this coffee maker claims to brew a full 50oz carafe in three to four minutes, which is technically accurate, but only if you leave the central unit switched on continuously to ensure the water is always heated. If you don’t want to waste energy, you’re looking at a near twenty-minute wait for the full brew cycle.

There is a slight ‘plasticky’ odor when you take this coffee maker from the box and use it for the first couple of times, so it might be worth running a few cycles of hot water before brewing any coffee.

You’ll have no hardship in cleaning the Speed Brew, selected parts are dishwasher safe, and even without using a dishwasher, this appliance is still relatively easy to wash by hand.

Should you buy the Bunn Speed Brew Elite Coffee Maker?

The Bunn Speed Brew High Altitude is the middle ground between the GRB Velocity and the Speed Brew Platinum as far as price points go. The coffee quality is the same, but personal preference to how that coffee is made (and kept warm) will dictate which model you choose.

That you need to leave all three of these appliances switched on to benefit from the fast brew features is more suited to people who drink enormous amounts of coffee or for more commercial use.
