Krups Thermobrew Coffee Maker (EC322)

Krups are known for making costly professional coffee makers. Still, they also produce very affordable small kitchen appliances like the EC322 Thermobrew coffee maker, which has a large capacity to make a delicious, full-flavored coffee.

It's reasonably attractive, has a permanent gold-tone filter, and is programmable, so you get to choose precisely when your coffee is ready, and if you get side-tracked, this coffee maker can keep your drink warm for up to four hours.

The best part is that the Krups Thermobrew is exceptionally affordable.

The Krups EC322 coffee maker has a relatively modern design that is pleasant enough to look at. The design is crisp and clean and makes good use of color. The unit’s main body is made from quality black plastic, which is accented by a silver trim and a hint of orange on the carafe and lid, for an overall appearance that is a step above generic.

The control panel on the front is simple yet fresh, though the display panel is a bit small and not the easiest to read. While the carafe has a sleek, curvaceous shape, it also incorporates the same color scheme to match the rest of the device.

With 70oz of coffee, this appliance will keep you fueled for the whole day or hold enough Joe for the entire family’s morning brew. The box states this coffee maker is a 14-cup machine, but it’s probably more like eight to ten cups, which is still a pretty good return on investment.

You won’t need to worry about waste, though, as Krups designed this coffee maker to brew small batches of coffee just as well as it makes large ones with the ‘1 to 4 cup’ setting.

  • Thermobrew Technology: Krups ‘three-step brewing process’ incorporates a large shower head, hot water circuit (we’re not sure what that is), and their ‘FlavourMix Tube’ that stirs the coffee during the brewing process.
  • Programmable Timer: Choose when your first cup of the day is ready with the easy to use programmable timer.
  • Four Hour Keep Warm Cycle: As this coffee maker has such a large carafe, it comes with a keep warm cycle that is longer than standard to ensure that non of your coffee goes to waste.
  • Permanent Gold-Tone Filter: This is a good quality reusable filter that helps you brew a delicious cup of coffee and leaves relatively few grounds in your cup.
  • Bold Brew Setting: If you like a more robust cup of coffee, the bold brew setting will deliver a stronger flavor. It will take a little longer to brew, though.
  • Pause & Serve: If you can’t wait until the coffee maker has finished brewing the whole batch, pause the cycle, remove the carafe and pour yourself a cup, and then you replace the container to resume the process.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

First things first, the Krups Thermobrew makes a full-bodied, aromatic, and flavorsome cup of coffee; it might take a little longer than other similar appliances, but considering the huge quantities this coffee maker will produce, that’s to be expected.

Despite all the complex-sounding features and industry jargon used in the marketing blurb and on the box, this coffee maker is surprisingly easy to use. The buttons are clear and concise to avoid any confusion.

The overall build quality is pretty good; however, there is one design flaw that seems to be prevalent on most Krups coffee makers. The pour spout design on the carafe appears to have some kind of affliction that causes coffee to spill out when you’re pouring a brew unless you’re exceedingly careful.

While this coffee maker isn’t difficult to clean per se, it’s not exactly straightforward, either. Coffee grinds easily get stuck in the gold-tone filter, and some consumers report they’ve had to work harder than they would like to get the carafe clean.

It’s not a deal-breaker, however, especially when you consider how affordable this appliance is.

Should you buy the Krups Thermobrew Coffee Maker (EC322)?

Krups have made a coffee maker with a substantial capacity for coffee addicts and larger families. You won’t get 14 cups as Krups suggests, but you’re still in for a whole vat of Joe with the ThermoBrew EC322.

It’ll have a delicious, full-flavored coffee ready for you when you wake up, and then keep the rest warm for another four hours so you won’t waste any precious coffee.

All this for an extremely low price point.

We think the Krups personal grind coffee maker is one of the nicest looking appliances on the market. It has a relatively small footprint, but that didn’t stop Krups giving it a great deal of character.

Despite its compact design, this appliance has many appealing aesthetical features. The stainless-steel of the main body and the handle of the carafe gives off a professional coffee shop vibe, while the orange trim really makes the colors pop. The buttons are back-lit and give off an orange glow to complete the overall color scheme.

With only a 20oz fluid capacity, the Krups Personal Grind coffee maker is pretty small, especially when you compare it with other similarly priced appliances; you’re only going to get a couple of cups of Joe per batch with this coffee maker.

Again, many companies list their coffee makers as a much larger capacity appliance than is strictly true, unless you drink your coffee from one of those tiny mugs. It’s always a good idea to look at the actual fluid ounces of an appliance rather than the claimed number of cups.

  • Burr Coffee Grinder: Grind your own fresh coffee using this stainless-steel burr coffee grinder. It’s adjustable so that you can choose your preferred grind size, and it’ll automatically brew them for you too.
  • Auto Keep Warm: When your coffee has finished brewing, the coffee maker automatically switches to ‘Keep Warm’ mode to keep your drink at the optimal temperature for up to 30 minutes.
  • Bold Brew Function:  If you like a more robust tasting coffee, you’re able to get a  more concentrated brew at the touch of a button.
  • Reusable Filter: A stainless-steel permanent filter is included with this coffee maker, a money saver compared to disposable filters.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

This Krups coffee maker can make an excellent cup of coffee, which is only made better by the ability to use your own freshly ground beans.

While the grinder built into this coffee maker is far from perfect, it won’t give you an ideal grind, but it will still do a decent job, though it is a bit on the loud side.

Like previous Krupp coffee makers with ‘no-drip spouts,’ this one can be a little leaky too. A steady hand will be required when pouring your brew into your mug.

Cleaning should be relatively straightforward; however, you will need to disassemble and clean this appliance after every use, primarily if you’ve used the grinder as the coffee grounds tend to get in every nook and cranny.

Should you buy the Krups Personal Café Grind Drip Coffee Maker?

Krups have designed this coffee maker to satisfy a particular corner of the market. It’s small (almost ‘single-serve’ small) and compact, which is suited to single people who like a morning coffee or two, or at a push for a couple to enjoy a brew together.

It’s a little more expensive than your average compact device, but that’s down to the built-in coffee grinder. You can check the full list of coffee makers with grinder.

  • Available Colors: Brushed Steel
  • Dishwasher Safe: Yes

The Krups ‘Simply Brew’ coffee maker is very middle-of-the-road in appearance. There’s nothing overtly ugly about this appliance, but it does nothing to stand out from the crowd either. Though it is trimmed with the brushed stainless-steel finish that many consumers find appealing.

With a rectangular shape and compact size, Krups have ensured this coffee maker is easy to store or won’t take up much space if you’d prefer to leave it on a countertop.

Even though Krups list this coffee maker as a 5-cup machine (25oz), your average coffee drinker is only going to get two or three cups maximum per batch. But considering the compact nature and low price point of the ‘Simply Brew Compact Coffee Maker,’ that’s not a bad return for your investment.

Ease of Use, Build Quality & Cleaning

As far as making coffee is concerned, this little coffee maker offers a huge bang for your buck when you consider how little money you’ve spent on it. However, that low price point means there is little in the way of bells and whistles.

It is straightforward to use, and it offers a ‘pause and serve’ feature, so if you want to pour yourself a cup in the middle of a brew cycle, the device will pause until you return the carafe, and when it’s finished brewing it will automatically switch to keep warm mode.

However, there is no auto-shutoff built into this coffee maker, so you’ll have to remember to manually switch it off when you’re finished.

Filling the water tank can be a challenge, too, as the lid will not open past 90 degrees, so if you’re using a large water vessel to fill your coffee maker, you’re going to struggle somewhat.

Krups supply a reusable filter for this machine, which is nice, but it’s not overly robust, so you’ll need to be gentle while you’re cleaning it, or you might cause some damage.

One of the features of the ‘Krups Simply Brew Compact Coffee Maker’ is a non-drip pour spout on the carafe; unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to work, and if you don’t have a steady hand, you’re going to get a few minor dribbles.

All the removable parts of this coffee maker are dishwasher safe, removing the stress of a challenging cleanup operation.

Should you buy the Krups Simply Brew Compact Coffee Maker?

This coffee maker is one of the most affordable small coffee maker, so obviously, some concessions will need to be made. The omission of an automatic off switch is disappointing, and the appliance can be difficult to fill with water. Still, overall, this is a decent coffee maker for a low-risk outlay.
