In this extremely close fight, the Ninja Foodi FD401 emerged as our favorite multicooker because it’s far more attractive than the Instant Pot Duo Crisp, has marginally more functionality, and has a little more thought put into the design.
So if you’ve got the funds and space for a massively versatile and reliable multicooker, Ninja has got you covered with the Foodi FD401 8-quart 9-in-1 Multicooker.

When you consider the price of traditional cookers, even the most expensive multicookers put these large kitchen appliances to shame. Of course, each appliance has its pros and cons, but for the price point, multicookers represent excellent value for more with incredible versatility.
While the Ninja Foodi FD401 is relatively affordable when compared with a traditional cooker, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is markedly cheaper still, making it more widely available to those who are more frugal in nature or are on a tighter budget.
Ninja Foodi 0-1 Instant Pot
If you’re looking into buying a new multicooker, then you must consider the capacity (the amount of food you can fit into your cooker) of the appliance. People of the single persuasion or couples may not need a large capacity device. However, with larger capacity comes more versatility to cook entire meals with ease and efficiency.
On paper, the Ninja Foodi FD401 9-in-1 8-Quart Multicooker is exactly the same capacity as the Instant Pot Duo Crisp 8-Quart Multicooker. But let’s take a closer look if this is the case.
Despite having the same 8-quart capacity, the basket that comes with the Ninja Foodi has a little less height than the Instant Pot counterpart, meaning it is wider and you can fit in more substantial cuts of meat and whole chickens into the appliance more easily.
Ninja have also managed to fit that 8-quart capacity into a smaller footprint and the multicooker, as a whole, is much lighter than the Duo Crisp.
Ninja Foodi 1-1 Instant Pot
The whole point of a multicooker is to have as much versatility in one appliance as possible, eliminating the need for overcrowding of devices in the kitchen.
Do not be fooled into thinking that the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is more versatile than the Ninja Foodi FD401 because it is named the “11-in-1 Multicooker”, because it’s all just a question of semantics.
In actuality, despite being named the “Ninja Foodi 9-in-1”, it has 12 different abilities, albeit a couple of these use the same settings.
These two appliances both possess the ability to pressure cook, slow cook, air fry, steam, broil, bake, roast, sauté, dehydrate, and keep warm. While the Ninja Foodi can also sear and make yogurt, the Duo Crisp can sous vide.
Ninja also supplies a dual layer “reversible rack” to increase versatility and cook multiple foods simultaneously, unlike the single layer rack that comes with the Instant Pot, giving the Foodi the edge here.
Ninja Foodi 2-1 Instant Pot
Looks aren’t everything, so they say, and an appliance’s appearance has no bearing on whether or not a multicooker is a top performer in the kitchen.
But to steal a phrase from Robert Downey Jr in the movie ‘Ironman’; Is it too much to ask for both?
In the case of the Ninja Foodi, no, it’s not. Because the FD401 is ridiculously pretty. Far prettier than the Instant Pot Duo Crisp. That’s not to say Instant Pot have designed an ugly appliance, only that Ninja’s design is much more appealing.
The Duo Crisp is nice enough with a stainless-steel exterior and pale blue LCD on the front, but it is very middle-of-the-road. But Ninja put more thought into the appearance of their Foodi multicooker, keeping on brand with a sleek and stealthy exterior.
The control panel is more fun to look at too, and the dials and buttons have a much cleaner layout and intuitive design.
Ninja Foodi 3-1 Instant Pot
How effectively a device functions is one of the top two most important categories when it comes to comparing devices. Appearance, cost, capacity, and versatility will not matter if the appliance doesn’t do that for which it was built.
There is no separating the Ninja Foodi and the Instant Pot Duo Crisp. Both these appliances are superb multicookers that produce wonderfully crisp and tender meats, stews, and whole chickens.
Almost equally versatile, these appliances can both provide you and your family with meals you can sit down and enjoy together.
Ninja Foodi 4-2 Instant Pot
This is the second of the top-two most essential categories to examine when considering such expensive appliances.
Much like the functionality category, both these appliances are on a level playing field when it comes to reliability and durability. There is a reason why Ninja and Instant Pot sell more multicookers than any other brand (probably combined), and one of the reasons is how reliable these cookers truly are.
The Ninja Foodi has an astonishing 95% of Amazon customers who rate this appliance at four to five stars, while the Duo Crisp has an equally impressive 92%. And the number of units they have sold is astronomical.
Long story short, both these appliances have almost complete consumer confidence.
Ninja Foodi 5-3 Instant Pot
Nobody likes tidying up after spending time in the kitchen, or at least we’ve never met anyone who does, and using exceedingly high temperatures to bake, sear and sauté meats only exacerbates the situation, so a product that is easily cleaned is a god-send.
Both Ninja and Instant Pot went different routes when choosing the material for their cooking pots, yet they both managed to produce utensils that are dishwasher safe and very easy to clean.
The Ninja Foodi 8-Quart Multicooker comes with a ceramic-coated pot that consumers rate very highly on the easy to clean scale, while the Instant Pot Duo Crisp has a Stainless Steel cooking pot which is every bit as straightforward to get shiny and clean.
However, we’re awarding the point to the Duo Crisp in this category as you will need to be more careful cleaning a ceramic-coated pot otherwise you could risk chipping away at the coating and contaminating your food.
The stainless-steel pot is much more robust and allows for more elbow grease when cleaning up after a good meal.

Who Is The Ninja Foodi FD401 8-Quart Multicooker For?
Ninja have covered almost all the bases with the Foodi FD401 multicooker, its massive cooking capacity, substantial versatility and world class performance & durability make this an ideal choice if you want a multicooker that makes most other kitchen appliances obsolete.
While it is a pretty big device, it has a slightly smaller footprint and is lighter than the Instant Pot Duo Crisp, so if you’re tight for kitchen space that’s something to consider.
The Ninja Foodi 8-quart cooker is not cheap though, so it’s more suited to those with a little extra disposable income. We think it could even replace their own Ninja Air Fryer.
Who Is The Instant Pot Duo Crisp 8-Quart Multicooker For?
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp 8-quart Multicooker is the only appliance from Instant Pot with air frying capabilities, which makes it the only real contender against the Ninja Foodi FD401, and while we feel the Ninja cooker is marginally better, the Duo Crisp is significantly cheaper, which makes it a better choice for those on a tighter budget.
If you don’t mind a less attractive device and have the space for this gargantuan multicooker (it’s probably a good idea to have a permanent place on the countertop for the Duo Crisp as it is extremely heavy for a ‘small’ kitchen appliance), well you can make a fairly big saving whilst still having one of the best multicookers on the market. For the air frying we would recommend choosing Instant Pot air fryer instead.
So, the Ninja Foodi FD401 9-in-1 8-Quart Multicooker emerged victorious in our head to head, but that doesn’t mean the Duo Crisp doesn’t deserve your consideration. Both these models are excellent examples of appliances that have something to offer almost everyone who loves to cook.
Just take into consideration the categories that matter most to your individual needs and see which model is the right multicooker for you.
