What’s common between All-Clad and Scanpan?

Both Scanpan and All Clad use multiple layers in the design of their pots and pans, creating strong, durable cookware. All Clad uses stainless steel handles on all their cookware that are riveted to the pots and pans. Scanpan, on the other hand, only uses stainless steel handles on their stainless steel cookware. All their other handles are attached to their pans using a patented locking system that is very secure. Scanpan uses highly specialized non-stick surfaces on their cookware that may be a deciding factor when deciding between the two brands.

Both cookware brands are at the top of the range and are very pricey but customers looking for good quality pots and pans seem happy to pay the asking price and are happy with the use they get out of the cookware.

Based in Denmark, Scanpan uses 100% recycled aluminum from sustainable sources to create strong, durable cookware with top quality non-stick surfaces. All Clad, on the other hand, is based in the USA and specializes in bonded cookware combining the benefits of aluminum, copper and stainless steel to create top quality products.

While Scanpan does have a stainless steel range, they focus mostly on aluminum cookware and specialize in the non-stick surfaces they offer. When induction stoves hit the markets Scanpan developed a base for their aluminum pots and pans so they can be used on induction stoves. All Clad finishes off their cookware in a magnetic stainless steel layer, making all their cookware induction friendly.

All Clad offers good quality nonstick cookware but lacks durability compared to Scanpan.

Pieces

Both sets offer a 10-inch fry pan as well as 2-quart and 3-quart saucepans with lids. Additionally, Scanpan includes a 3-quart sauté pan with lid, a 1quart saucepan with a lid and a 6.5-quart stockpot with lid.

Additionally, All-Clad offers an 8-inch fry pan, a 4-quart sauté pan with a lid and an 8-quart stockpot with lid. All-Clad might be more suitable if you’re cooking for a larger crowd.

Features

Both sets have a 5-ply construction design, starting with an aluminum base and are bonded with a stainless steel exterior. This design also makes for superior heat distribution when cooking and a very stylish look. Both Scanpan and All-Clad offer top quality non-stick coatings on these sets, making these both top non-stick options when choosing the cookware.

Quality

Scanpan has coated this set in their Stratanium non-stick layer which has a unique textured surface and is harder than steel. All-Clad coats their non-stick set with 3 layers of PFOA-free non-stick coating. It is scratch-resistant and very tough and long-lasting. Scanpan has gone even further by using 5 layers of their Stratanium non-stick coating, ensuring a longer-lasting and functional non-stick surface.

Both sets are oven safe to 500F and also dishwasher safe, although both manufacturers recommend hand washing to protect your set from the harmful chemical in dishwashing detergents that damage the non-stick coatings.

Ergonomics

This Scanpan Classic set looks dashing in black and blends in well with the textured non-stick coating. The long, elegant handles are heat resistant and designed for comfort. Judging on looks alone, this definitely looks like the more elegant and sturdy set.

These All-Clad pots and pans have a unique design, narrowing towards the top edge. The contoured stainless-steel handles compliment the design and color and are securely riveted. They are designed for a comfortable hold and to stay cool. A couple of customers did find that the handles got hot when cooking. Customers have noted that this is a heavier set to work with, but not uncomfortably so.

Price

These two sets are competitively priced with the Scanpan being only slightly more expensive. For top-quality sets, they are worth the purchase but the price won’t be a deciding factor as they are so similarly priced.

Durability

These are strong, sturdy sets with excellent non-stick coatings. Scanpan’s 5-ply design is very strong but their 5 layer Stratanium is superior and designed to offer greater durability. The All-Clad is designed with a thick, warp-resistant base and together with its 5-ply design and 3 layers of non-stick coating makes for a super strong set.

Verdict

These are top quality non-stick sets that you can buy with confidence. Both are strong and durable and offer excellent non-stick cooking. Scanpan’s non-stick construction and layering are superior though and definitely more durable. In general, Scanpan customers are happier with their purchase and are delighted with the quality of the non-stick used.

A great choice if you are looking for high quality and beautiful nonstick cookware set.

Pieces

Both sets offer 2 fry pans, 2 saucepans with lids and a sauté pan with lid. Additionally, Scanpan offers a 7 ½-quart dutch oven while All-Clad offers an 8-quart stockpot with a lid.

The Scanpan saucepans only differ in size by ¾ quart which is a pity because a larger saucepan would have been more helpful. The All-Clad set offers slightly larger saucepans and saute pan.

Features

Both sets use a 5-ply bonded construction that alternates layers of aluminum and stainless steel. This creates a warp-free design that offers even heating during the cooking process. Scanpan’s eco-friendly aluminum is finished with a stainless steel layer on the exterior of the pots and pans and the inner layer is covered with their signature Stratanium non-stick coating. If you’re looking for an induction friendly Scanpan set, this is the one to choose.

All Clad’s final layer is a highly polished stainless steel that provides excellent non-stick resistance and a beautiful shiny exterior.

Quality

Both All-Clad and Scanpan are top cookware manufacturers and the quality on both these sets does not disappoint. Both are oven safe to 500F, are dishwasher safe and optimized for induction cooking.

Scanpan combines their excellent Stratanium non-stick layer with the stainless steel to create a non-stick, induction friendly set. The non-stick layer is 10 times harder than steel and applied 5 times, making it super strong. Customers are very happy with the induction capabilities of these pots and pans and pleased with the cooking results. Unfortunately, some customers have found that the limited lifetime warranty on these pans only applies to the interior coating of the products.

Despite promising to be easy to maintain, customers commonly complain that food sticks to the All-Clad pans and that they stain and discolor easily. The manufacturer indicates that the All-Clad pans should not be used on high heats.

Ergonomics

The pots and pans in this Scanpan stainless steel set are beautiful with their stainless steel exterior and the black Stratanium non-stick inner. The lids look a bit strange though with their stainless steel and glass combination. The 18/10 stainless steel cast handles are more comfortable than the All-Clad handles and are also riveted to the pans.

All Clad’s highly polished stainless steel is very stylish. The flat stainless steel lids and flared pouring rims only add to the beauty of the set. It definitely is the better-looking set. The heat-resistant handles are riveted into the pans in the classic All-Clad fashion and have a large bolster and a hole for hanging the pans.

Price

There is very little price difference between these two sets, with the All-Clad costing only a little more.

Durability

Constructed using a 5-ply design, alternating aluminum and stainless steel, both the Scanpan and All-Clad sets are built to last. Scanpan’s superior non-stick layer is an added bonus if you are looking for a non-stick stainless steel set that is super durable. The All-Clad pots and pans may outlast the Scanpan set because they don’t have a non-stick layer.

Verdict

All Clad’s D5 stainless steel set offers a better variety of pot sizes, a nicer look and finish, and superior durability. The small difference in cost is definitely worth paying and this set will give you many years of enjoyable cooking and clean up if used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

All Clad’s non-stick layer is not as strong as Scanpan offers. Budget buyers should choose All-Clad set since it usually retails for around 3x lower price.

Features

Both sets of fry pans are constructed using various types of aluminum, a metal known for quick and even heating. The Scanpan fry pans are part of the Professional range and are made from their signature squeeze-cast aluminum and have an extra-thick pan base. The extra-thick pan base ensures it is perfectly flat and works very well on glass top and ceramic ranges, but it is not induction friendly.

The All Clad fry pans are made with hard-anodized aluminum and their stainless-steel bonded anti-warp base makes them induction-friendly. Some customers found that the smaller pan did not work on their various induction stoves, but the bigger pan did.

The biggest difference is that Scanpan uses recycled aluminum that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. Both sets offer PFOA-free non-stick surfaces which are also scratch resistant.

Quality

These sets are both oven safe to 500F, and both dishwasher safe although Scanpan recommends washing the fry pans by hand to extend the lifetime of the non-stick layer. Both manufacturers boast of scratch resistant non-stick surfaces that are strong but Scanpan’s Green Tek non-stick surface is embedded with ceramic-titanium particles, which gives it additional strength. Both Scanpan and All Clad offer a limited lifetime warranty on these pans.

Ergonomics

Scanpan’s design features clean, elegant lines and the black pan body contrasts well with the two-tone matt-and-mirror stainless steel handles. A couple of customers have complained that the pans are too shallow and better suited to frying eggs than big frying jobs, but most customers are thrilled with the design and capabilities of the pans.

All Clad’s fry pans both have a wide, flat base and a low-profile shape but the angle of the sides does makes it difficult to slide food out of the pan. While the stainless-steel handles are designed for comfort, a few customers have complained that they found the indentation on the top of the handle too deep and the handle was uncomfortable to use. The handles seem to have been designed for people with big hands, leaving customers with smaller hands unable to maneuvre the pans comfortably.

Both pans are equally comfortable to work with but the All Clad pans are a couple of hundred grams lighter than the Scanpan pans. This may be because the Scanpan fry pans are just an inch or so wider than the All Clad pans.

Price

While these two sets of fry pans are very similar in quality and ergonomics, the All Clad set costs about a third of the price of the Scanpan set. One has to question whether it is worth paying three times more for a set of similar quality and why it would be worth doing so.

If you are determined to support environmentally friendly producers who use sustainable sources of metal then that would be a worthy reason. Another may be because the non-stick surface on the Scanpan pans is so much more superior. Customers have noted that the product lasts a good 4 to 5 years which is quite a long time for non-stick surfaces.

If you don’t mind about the source of the metal, or that you will have to replace the pan in a couple of years because the non-stick layer is gone, then go ahead and purchase the All Clad fry pans which are much cheaper.

Durability

Both sets are strong and sturdy and incredibly durable. Made from good quality aluminum, with strong stainless-steel handles and good non-stick surfaces, they are both made to be used for a long time. The limited lifetime warranties offered by both Scanpan and All Clad speak to their commitment of durability and quality. The customer feedback on the Scanpan nonstick surface on these pans is excellent. That would be the only distinguishing feature between the two sets. Scanpan’s Green Tek ceramic-titanium non-stick surface is outstanding and lasts for many more years than other non-stick coatings do.

Verdict

The Scanpan pans definitely offer a better quality non-stick option with their ceramic-titanium surface. If you are looking for a non-stick pan that is going to last longer, then the Scanpan is worth every dollar it costs and is an excellent investment for any kitchen.
