Things to love:

  • Large capacity: Perfect for family gatherings and holidays. This model offers the largest inside space in all of the brand´s toaster ovens. It can fit a large size turkey for roasting, and broil a 10 x 12 inches casserole. It also has the capacity to hold 4 dehydrating trays at the same time or baking more than 10 muffins. It can easily replace a full-size oven.
  • LCD Display: One of the biggest advantages it has on other brands has to be the LCD display that shows you all the 13 cooking options it offers, the temperature, the remaining cooking time, and the cooking phase in just one glance. These control features make it extremely easy, yet very sophisticated.
  • Versatility: More options than an average toaster oven in the market. You can choose between roast, broil, toast, air fry, dehydrate, and eight more pre-set functions. The convection cooking option is actually revolutionary because you can regulate the amount of air used when air frying or dehydrating for more uniformed cooking. This option is what the brand calls “Super Convection”, which is only available for this model.
  • Element IQ: This model comes with the Element IQ 6 technology, which consists of 6 individual quartz elements built-in on the top and the bottom of the unit. This aids in giving precise results when grilling or roasting.

What’s not to like?

  • Restrictions on food: Unlike many options in the market, this unit specifically has a sign that states “Do not use with foods that drip while cooking”, which a few of the users were disappointed about. These limits its use when it comes to different food options that may drip over a removable tray at the bottom of the oven.
  • Gets very hot while cooking: The second more recurrent critique on this model is that it gets really hot while using, which can be potentially dangerous in a family with children or curious pets. Besides, it warms up space around it, making it very uncomfortable during the summer.
  • Price: This model is more expensive than the average, which can make it unaffordable to some users.

Final Remarks

This unit is definitely the one to get if you like to entertain or have a big family, being the largest of all the toaster ovens by Breville. It is also the more sophisticated and has more options than any other, such as the air frying and dehydrating mode. On the other hand, many users have found it so easy to use that they didn’t have the need to check the instructions manual, all of this is thanks to the large LCD screen it contains. One of the downsides is that it is a pricey machine considering similar ones by other brands; however, for the size and the versatility, we believe it is worth it.

The BOV860BSS is one of Breville’s newest ovens. It has a large interior, and it includes an air frying preset function. It comes with the element IQ system for an even cook, and you can find it in a wide variety of colors. On the downside, it is quite pricey, and it includes neither dehydrate nor proof mode; therefore, the majority of customers prefer investing in the Smart Oven Air model (BOV900BSS), which has the same capacities of the BOV860BSS and then some more.

Things We Love

  • Versatility – It includes 11 cooking functions, such as slow cook, broil, air fry, and roast.
  • Cooking results – Thanks to its smart algorithms, the power is automatically adjusted for better temperature control, depending on the chosen preset function.
  • Maximized airflow – You can turn this setting off if you don’t need to cook with super convection, but you can opt for maximized airflow when you are air frying, or simply regular convection. Many customers have stated that meals turn out crispy and golden air fried.
  • Large interior – You can accommodate six slices of bread, a whole chicken, or a 13’’ pizza.
  • Illuminated interior – There is much positive feedback regarding the inside lighting because you don’t have to open the oven door every few minutes to check the food.
  • Accessories included – The oven comes with an air fry basket, enamel roasting pan, 13” non-stick pizza pan, wire rack, broiling rack, and a stainless steel crumb tray.
  • Warranty – It comes with a 2-year limited warranty from the date of original purchase.
  • Many colors to choose from – You can choose between black, blue, grey, and many others. Customers love this feature because their kitchens look more stylish.

What’s Not to Like

  • No instruction manual – Many buyers have remarked that the unit didn’t come with a manual for instructions or recipes.
  • It is missing some cooking functions – This model is in a similar price range than the BOV900BSS; however, unlike it, it is missing dehydrating and proofing mode.
  • Loud whistling – Some customers have mentioned that the oven emits a sound when there are about 10 minutes left to finish cooking, which you can’t turn off or lower down.

Disclosure: we may receive commissions from purchases made via our links at no additional costs to you.

Things to love:

  • Convection powered: A powerful fan is built in this model in order to ease the cooking process by removing the cold air in your food and maintain the correct temperature inside the oven.
  • Easy to clean: The oven walls have a non-stick coating that allows you to cook anything without the fear of needing to scrub later. The outside is made with brushed stainless steel that gives it a nice timeless look.
  • Nine cooking functions: This model offers nine pre-set options such as bake, toast, bagel, broil, and reheat. Therefore, this unit can replace a conventional oven, microwave, and toaster, all in one.
  • Includes accessories: There is no need to buy special utensils to fit the size of this appliance since it comes with a baking pan, broil rack, and pizza pan; all-fitting for the three rack positions.

What’s not to like?

  • Does not include air-frying mode: Although it contains a convection fan that keeps the air on the inside circulating, this model doesn’t include air frying nor dehydrating mode such as the Smart Oven Air. Actually, this model is the Smart Oven Pro´s predecessor, which explains why it has fewer cooking options.
  • Doesn´t have interior light: Unlike the Smart Oven Air, this unit does not include an interior light for regular checking. Hence, it is hard to see when the meal is fully cooked without opening the oven´s door.
  • Durability of the knobs: Some users stated problems with the durability of the knobs, which break after 2 or three years of use.

Final Remarks

The Smart Oven by Breville is definitely one powerful machine that can achieve many functions in just one appliance. The positive reviews point out that the results are optimal, the meals are cooked evenly and this unit can fit everyday use. On the other side, technology has reached more levels since this model came out, such as air frying and dehydrating options. Besides that, this is a good option for replacing a full-size oven.

  • Not so mini capacity: Your mini smart oven fits 4 not so mini slices of toast, cookies, tuna melts and 11 inch pizzas

Disclosure: we may receive commissions from purchases made via our links at no additional costs to you.

Things to love:

  • Super compact design: Perfectly engineered to fit the necessities of a couple or a single person. In addition, this size allows versatility for small kitchens or less space on the countertop.
  • Element iQ: Although smaller, this model contains one of the cooking pillars of Breville: the Element iQ technology, which allows more precision for the different cooking options through 4 quartz heating elements.
  • Capacity: 3 racks for different uses allow you to broil on the upper, toast and make pizza on the one in the middle, and bake and roast on the lowest. Its “not so mini” size fits 11-inch casseroles or trays for cookies.
  • Less electricity consumption: Because of its size, your electrical bill will be reduced since it takes less time to pre-heat, hence, less energy needed.

What’s not to like?

  • Unstable tray rack: Since the rack does not contain a safety lock or a mechanism to stay in place, it can easily come out when you are pulling the tray or the pan that contains the food. This was one of the things users disliked the most.
  • Reaches high temperatures on the outside: The surface can be very hot, which caused burns in some of the users.
  • Doesn’t make a beeping sound when done: Unlike usual small ovens or microwaves, this model doesn’t make any beep sound when the cooking process is over; however, the light on the screen changes from orange to blue when the cycle selected is complete.
  • Issues with toasting mode: Some users have found it to be very difficult to achieve an even toasting result, which is a big problem since this is one of the most used functions of a mini oven.

Final Remarks

Comparing this model to any other Smart Oven by Breville, we found this one to be suited for the smallest kitchens and everyday non-complicated uses. Especially college students and people with busy lives get great use of this appliance.

Given the fact that this does not contain a convection fan, the issue with uniformity when cooking gets worse, so it limits some uses you can get with the bigger models. The hot surface is something to consider if there are small children in the house. However, the majority of the users seemed very happy with the purchase.

Things to love:

  • Many cooking options: This model offers up to 10 different pre-set functions for cooking, such as toast, bake, roast, broil, and slow cook. The toasting option gives you a seven-level range between light and very dark toast.
  • Capacity: This is the smaller version of the Breville Smart Oven Air, which can hold up to 9 toasts at a time while the Smart Oven Pro can fit 6. Therefore, it’s perfect for everyday use in a small to medium family. This model does not take too much countertop space; also, the size helps to cook the meals faster than a large oven.
  • Stylish outside look: If you want to give a pop of color to your kitchen! This model is by far the most fun since it comes in three different colors: black sesame, cranberry red, and the original stainless steel.
  • Smart Element iQ: This new technology for heating up intelligently contains five quartz elements that activate separately according to the mode of cooking selected, which is adequate for specific results.
  • Easy to use: Thanks to the LCD display you can control the whole oven, know the remaining cooking time, and the intensity and the temperature.

What’s not to like?

  • Defects on the convection system: The great majority of the negative reviews come from users that stated problems with the convection option since apparently, the fan stopped working after just a few months of use. Usually, this incident, accordingly with users, comes after hearing really loud noises coming from the convection fan.
  • Software error: Several users said that a computer error was shown on the first attempt to use. This error doesn´t allow the machine to work in any way. According to the Breville customer service, it seems to be due to electric failure.
  • Weak door glass: A handful of reviews stated that the glass on the door shattered during use after reaching very high temperatures on modes like pizza.

Final Remarks

The Smart Oven Pro is the smaller version of the full-size Smart Oven Air that is already one of the most powerful toaster ovens of Breville. They share 10 of 13 cooking functions and the Smart Element iQ technology and even the commands and LCD screen that make it so easy to use. However, the price is very high given the number of critiques about the quality. Those are the reasons why we ranked this one as one of the lowest from the bunch.

6. Breville BOV650XL

Sale 42%
Breville the Compact Smart Oven, Countertop Electric Toaster Oven BOV650XL
  • Smart element IQ: There’s heat, and there’s smart heat; Element IQ transfers heat intelligently across 4 quartz elements for accurate and stable heat just where and when you want it for perfect results, every time

  • All the room for delicious you’re looking for: 4 Slice Toaster, 12 inches Pizza, 6 cup muffin tray, roast chicken and anything else you’ve got for it

Disclosure: we may receive commissions from purchases made via our links at no additional costs to you.

Things to love:

  • Compact design: Without going all “mini oven”, this is the intermedium size between the Mini Smart Oven and the Smart Oven. It can fit 4 slices of bread or a 12-inch pizza.
  • 8 pre-set cooking functions: You can choose between toast, bagel, roast, broil, bake, pizza, reheat, and cookies.
  • Smart heat: Just like all the toaster ovens by Breville, this one also has Smart Element iQ technology through 4 quartz elements of individual heating, similar to the Mini Smart Oven.

What’s not to like?

  • No convection fan: For being just a few bucks less than the Smart Oven, this one does not have a convection fan that helps circulate the hot air on the inside of the unit. For the price, this is disappointing.
  • No interior light: For being a deep interior oven and not having much height, users stated that in order to check if the back of the food is fully cooked, they needed to pull the whole tray out, difficulting and interrupting the cycle.
  • Defects on fabrication: Several users posted reviews complaining about the reliability of this model. Some stated that it only worked for a few months before breaking, others got the “E01” software error just like the Smart Oven Pro.

Final Remarks

Out of all of the Breville toaster ovens, this one should be the one that fits the more amount of clients because of its compact and comfortable size.

However,  if we compare to its bigger version (which is not much more expensive) the difference between both pre-set options is abysmal since the convection cooking is lost in this model. Besides that, the quality defects appear recurrently in this unit. We recommend going bigger with the Smart Oven or going smaller with the Mini Smart because this one doesn’t seem to offer an advantage over any of them.

Our score: 3.5 out of 5

Breville toaster oven comparison

BOV900BSS vs BOV900BSSUSC

This is the same model. Our guess is that the USC has to do something with the United States market.

BOV900BSS vs BOV845BSS

Both ovens have the Element IQ technology, which consists of 6 individual quartz elements built-in on the top and bottom to ensure that the temperature is right in each preset mode for an even cook. Besides, the two models have a stylish design and include the accessories you need. However, they are different in some aspects, such as:

  • The size – The Smart Oven Air BOV900BSS is the largest unit of all Breville ovens, so you need to consider this if you don’t have a large countertop. The product dimensions are 21.4 x 17.2 x 12.8 inches
  • Cooking functions – The Smart Oven Pro BOV845BSS has ten cooking settings instead of 13, and it is missing proofing, air frying, and dehydrating techniques.
  • Convection technology – The Smart Oven Air has a two-speed air fan for better temperature control and cooking results.
  • Warranty – The BOV900BSS has a 2-year warranty, unlike the Smart Oven Pro, which has a 1-year warranty only.
  • Price – The Smart Oven Air is more expensive, but it’s also more versatile and with a larger capacity.
  • Capacity – The Smart Oven Air fits nine slices of toast because it has one cubic ft. capacity and the Smart Oven Pro has 0.8 ft. space inside, which is enough to fit six slices of toast.

Consider your personal preferences to determine which oven is best for you. If you are looking for a larger unit that can work like an oven and air fryer, we recommend the BOV900BSS. Sure, it is less budget-friendly than the other, but many users have stated that it is worth the investment. Not only can you rely on a 2-year warranty, but you can also fit up to 9 slices of bread at once for your family, and you will enjoy the benefits of a superior convection technology.

However, if your budget is the deciding factor, you may opt for the Smart Oven Pro and still enjoy a versatile oven with ten different cooking functions.

BOV900BSS vs BOV860BSS

The two models have a large interior and an element IQ for better cooking results in all of the preset functions. They are both versatile units with inside lighting and super convection technology and include a 2-year warranty. Also, they are the only Breville ovens with an air frying set. Now, let’s see the aspects in which they differ:

  • Inside capacity – The BOV900BSS has the widest interior of all Breville ovens; inside its one cubic ft., you can fit up to nine slices of bread at once. On the other hand, the BOV860BSS has a 0.8 cubic ft. capacity and you can fit six slices of bread at a time.
  • Exterior dimensions – The Smart Oven Air (BOV900BSS) has a slightly larger countertop footprint than the BOV860BSS; therefore, if you have limited counter space, you should consider this aspect.
  • Color choices – The BOV900BSS only comes in brushed stainless steel, unlike the BOV860BSS, which comes in different colors, like black, grey, blue, and many more.
  • Cooking functions – The Smart Oven Air has 13 preset cooking functions, including dehydrating and proofing, which the BOV860BSS is missing.

Both ovens have an excellent performance according to users; nevertheless, we recommend opting for the BOV900BSS because it has a better capacity and more cooking settings (including dehydrating and proofing).

The BOV860BSS is currently on sale, so it is slightly less expensive than the Smart Oven Air; however, its usual price is higher, even though it has less preset cooking settings.

The only situation in which we would recommend the BOV600BSS above the BOV900SS is if you don’t have enough counter space, or if you want a large and colored oven, no matter the case.

BOV845BSS vs BOV800XL

These ovens are very similar; they both have the same capacity and can fit six slices of bread or a 13’’ pizza. Also, they come with a baking pan, pizza pan, and a broil rack. The warranty of each lasts one year, and they have a convection fan for even cooking.

The main difference is that the Breville BOV845BSS has ten present functions instead of nine. This unit comes with a slow cook function that the BOV800XL doesn’t have; the slow cook setting lets you cook for long periods at low temperatures, and you can set it at high or low, depending on how many hours you want to cook your dish for (high for 2-8 hours and low for 4-10 hours).

There is another difference between the units, which is the illuminated interior. The BOV800XL does not have inside lighting, and the BOV845BSS does, and the light switches on automatically after the dish is ready.

We recommend choosing BOV845BSS. The price is practically the same, and it has some upgraded features over the BOV800XL; however, both ovens have some negative feedback regarding their durability, and many users have stated that shortly after the warranty expires, the fan stops working. Therefore, you might want to consider investing in a Breville oven that offers better value for money.

BOV450XL vs BOV650XL

When it comes to BOV450XL and BOV650XL, it comes down to the size and the capacity you want and need.

Both of them have the smart Element IQ for better transfer of heat, depending on where the power is needed. They have eight cooking functions, such as bake, broil, toast, and roast, and a capacity for four slices of bread or a 12’’ pizza, and a 1-year warranty.

However, the difference relies on how much space you have inside of them. The Compact Smart Oven (BOV650XL) has a 0.6 cubic ft. interior and you can easily fit a 12” pizza in it. The Mini Smart Oven (BOV450XL) has a 0.4 cubic ft. capacity only, but it is enough to accommodate an 11” pizza.

Both ovens have a wide range of cooking settings, are lightweight, and offer high-grade performance. We recommend the Mini Smart Oven if, as its name suggests, you are looking for the smallest unit. But, if fitting a 12’’ pizza instead of an 11’’ pizza is necessary to you, and your counter space allows it, you may opt for the Compact Smart Oven for little extra money.
