  • Weight: 1.15 pounds
  • Filtration capacity: 100 gallon
  • Flow rate: 0.5 GPM
  • Filtration method: activated carbon filter and ion exchange resin
  • Certification: NSF and WQA
  • Warranty: 2-year

Things to Like

  • It has a high contaminant reduction – the PFM400H is a highly effective filtration system that removes over 70 different contaminants.  It removes 99% of lead, cysts, and industrial pollutants. It also clears out over 96% of mercury, VOCs, and many other contaminants like the emerging components (BPA, TCPP, and TCEP).
  • Improves the taste of water significantly – the unit gets rid of over 96% of chlorine (taste and odor) and other organic chemicals. Moreover, it has a MineralClear core that traps sediments down to 0.5 microns and also gives the water a refreshing taste as it passes over the natural mineral stones. You get overall great-tasting water that’s clear and has no foul odor.
  • It has a decent flow rate – the water flow is rated at 0.5 GPM, but users mentioned that it comes even faster when the faucet’s pressure is high. It takes less than 15 seconds to fill up a tall glass of water.
  • Easy to install – installing this unit is straightforward and needs no tools to mount it. The unit comes with multiple adapters/connectors for both outer and inner threads, which cover most standard faucet configurations. The only faucet styles it doesn’t fit are pull-out/pull-down and handheld faucets.
  • Convenient to use – the horizontal design of the PFM400H might not suit everyone, but unlike vertical models, it does save up space and enhance usability. It can fit well in awkwardly shaped sinks and feature a 90-degree ball valve mounted on the side that lets you easily switch between filtered and unfiltered water.
  • Has a filter-change indicator – the system has a built-in CleanSensor monitor with a  small but visible light on the side that helps notify you when it’s time to change the filter.

What not to like?

  • Limited filtration capacity – the PFM400H can filter up to 100 gallons of water only. That’s a lifespan of 2 to 3 months based on the amount of water you use. It’s a short lifespan, and it means you’ll have to replace the filter more frequently.
  • Water keeps on dripping – while the flow on this PUR filter is great, water tends to continue dripping after you’ve turned it off.
  • A few build quality issues – there are many complaints that the filter housing starts to leak and spray water all over after a few months of use, especially when using it often at high pressures.
  • The indicator light seems not durable – several customers mentioned that the indicator light goes off occasionally and even stops working completely after a while, thereby leaving you with no way of actually knowing when to replace the filter.

Final Remarks

This is an ideal option if you want a faucet water filter for clearing out a wide range of contaminants from city water. It’s a high-performance filter, but even so, you can’t use it on untreated water that’s microbiologically unsafe because it doesn’t remove harmful waterborne pathogens like viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.

2. Waterdrop WD-FC-01

Best value faucet water filter

Waterdrop WD-FC-01 NSF Certified 320-Gallon Long-Lasting Water Faucet Filtration System, Faucet...
  • NSF certifications: Tested and certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI standard 42 for the reduction of chlorine, taste and odor, and to NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free material. Provides you with safer and healthier water. (Please Note: This system DOES NOT lower TDS value due to the benefit minerals added in water. If you want to decrease the TDS value, please choose Waterdrop RO system.)
  • Long-lasting filter life: Each faucet filter provides 320 gallons of cleaner water, or 3 months of typical use - that’s 2x longer than most faucet filters. 3-pack replacement filters are available for purchase! (Search "WD-FF-01A")
  • Lead reduction: The innovative ACF material features great and fast filtration. You will fill up 4 water bottles (16.9 oz for each) in 1 minute. Upgraded filtration technology to reduce lead chlorine and other contaminants, offering safer and refreshing water for you and your family.

  • Dimensions: 5.25 x 6.75 x 2.81 inches
  • Weight: 1.15 pounds
  • Filtration capacity: 320 gallons
  • Flow rate: 0.5 GPM
  • Filtration method: activated carbon filter
  • Certification: NSF/ANSI 42 and 372
  • Warranty: 1 year

Things to Like

  • A fairly effective filtration process – the Waterdrop WD-FC-01 offers a 6-stage filtration process that removes over 94% of chlorine (taste and odor) and lead. The process also includes several sediment filtration layers, which can clear out both large and small particles like rust, sand, and suspended solids. It’s not the most robust filter system, but users attested that it significantly improves the water’s clarity, taste, and odor.
  • It has a large filtration capacity – you can process up to 320 gallons of water with this filter before it needs a replacement. That’s roughly a one-year service life for an average user, which is more than most standard faucet filters (they usually last 3 to 6 months).
  • Impressive filtration speed – there’s no much change in the flow of water after installing the filter. You get around half a gallon of filtered water per minute, which is pretty moderate. You can fill four large water bottles (16 ounces) in under 60 seconds, and the flow remains steady throughout the lifespan of the filter. The water flows out in a shower spray, which users liked too since it makes cleaning utensils easier.
  • Compatible with most standard faucets – Waterdrop provides six different adapters that can screw onto most common kitchen faucets with standard aerator sizes. Three are designed for faucets with internal threads, while the other three are for externally threaded faucets. The only faucet styles they don’t fit are hand-held and spray faucets.
  • It has a small profile and it’s easy to use – operating this filter requires just a flip of a lever, which allows it to switch to either the filtered or regular water. Moreover, the faucet is placed between the lever and the filter cartridge, which enhances the whole set’s stability and minimizes pressure on it when turning the lever. The filter cartridge sits vertically, but it’s not too bulky to be in the way.

What not to like?

  • Removes a limited amount of contaminants – most heavy metals, organic chemicals, microbial and inorganic contaminants don’t get eliminated, which means you can only use this filter on municipal water to improve its taste odor.
  • No filter replacement indicator – there’s no sensor or indicator light to let you know when the filter requires a replacement. You have to manually monitor its lifespan from the date of installation in order to replace it at the right time.
  • Tends to leak and fall off the faucet – the adapters are made of plastic that seems not to have strong, fine threads. They don’t grip the metal threads on the faucet tightly, which causes them to come off frequently when the water pressure is high. There are also claims that they expand or crack after a while, causing water to continually leak out.

Final Remarks

The Waterdrop does a good job of removing chlorine and lead from water, and it comes at a lower price than the rest. If you are looking for an affordable and effective faucet filter for filtering city water, it‘s a choice worth considering.

  • Filtration capacity: 200 gallons
  • Flow rate: 0.5 GPM
  • Filtration method: carbon block filtration
  • Certification: IAPMO, ANSI standard 42 and 53
  • Warranty: 2 year

Things to Like

  • Removes a reasonable amount of contaminants – the carbon block filter effectively reduces lead (99.3%), cysts (99.99%), turbidity (98.9 %), and 99.3% of sediment particles down to 0.5 microns. It equally takes care of organic chemicals like lindane (97.6%) and atrazine (94.9%). Up to 97.5% of chlorine is also removed, and both the smell and taste of water are noticeably improved.
  • Has a modest water flow rate – takes just a few seconds for the water to filter through this unit.  A single 8-ounce glass takes less than ten seconds to fill when the filter is new. There’s a drop in the flow during the last months of the filter’s lifespan, but it’s still sufficient for normal drinking and moderate washing – you can get a cup of filtered water within 30 seconds.
  • Easy installation and compatible with most faucets – mounting the filter is simple. It requires no tools, and you can align the unit to the right or left side of the faucet. The package includes two aerator adapters that can fit any current standard faucet except drop-down faucets.
  • Easy to use and has a simple, compact design – it features a handy diverter tab that allows you to switch quickly between filtered and regular tap water when you want to do dishes or any other task that doesn’t require filtered water. The filter itself has a miniature outlook. There are no bulky components, so it doesn’t get in the way.

 What not to like?

  • Not suitable for densely contaminated water – the Culligan FM-15A removes a limited amount of contaminants found in water. It cannot remove bacteria, viruses, fluoride, heavy metals like mercury, and most organic chemicals like arsenic, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. It’s more suited for filtering less contaminated municipal water.
  • The filter has a short lifespan – the filter can handle a maximum of 200 gallons of water, which is a pretty modest filtration capacity. Despite that, though, it doesn’t last long. It has a lifespan of only 2 to 3 months, and some even mentioned that it lasts less than that if the water is densely contaminated with chlorine and lead.
  • It tends to crack and leak over time – the unit has an all-plastic construction that doesn’t appear durable. There were reports of the adapter and other components like the casing cracking or breaking over time, especially when using high water pressure regularly. The adapter also tends to loosen on its base, causing drips of water to start leaking out around the seal.
  • Filter replacement is a bit tricky – many users found it hard to loosen or get the filter housing open. It becomes stuck and difficult to unscrew after a month or two of use, making it a real pain to get it off when you want to do a replacement.
  • No filter change indicator – this unit doesn’t feature a light indicator to notify you when replacement is needed, which is another inconvenience considering that the filter’s lifespan is short, requiring frequent replacement.

Final Remarks

Like the Waterdrop WD-FC-01, this Culligan FM-15A faucet filter comes at an economical price, and it’s capable of providing water that’s clean and tastes much better than plain tap water. Since it doesn’t remove a wide range of contaminants, it’s a good option for only improving the quality and taste of treated municipal water that has low contaminant levels.

4. Engdenton Faucet Water Filter

Engdenton Faucet Water Filter Stainless-Steel Reduce Chlorine High Water Flow, Water Purifier with...
  • High-quality food grade 304 stainless steel housing, Cracking-proof and no-leakage, durable and long life time;

  • Speedy water flow: 0.5GPM filtered water, 8 cups (8.5oz/cup) of clean water per minute, instant relief of thirsty ;

  • Effective at improving taste and removing sediments
  • It’s able to inhibit bacterial growth within the unit
  • The filter has a relatively long lifespan of 6 months
  • The flow rate is decent and remains steady for the most part
  • Simple to use and can swivel 360 degrees
  • Easy to install and has a 1-year warranty

  • Not ideal for filtering untreated/well water
  • The adaptor doesn’t fit correctly on all standard faucets
  • There’s no filter life indicator
  • Finding the replacement filters is a bit challenging

Filtration Performance

The filtration process of the Engdenton faucet water filter is very basic as it’s effective at improving the taste of water. The unit utilizes an activated carbon filter media, which clears out over 97% of chlorine (taste and odor). It also removes turbidity (83%) and sediments like sand, rust, and dirt. Other than those, the only other thing it’s able to do is to inhibit bacterial growth.

If your water has a high concentration of chlorine flavor or smell, then you might notice a significant improvement. However, some claimed there was no change or improvement in the taste of their water.

Capacity and Flow Rate

You won’t have to worry much about replacing the filter regularly because its filtration capacity is large, at 320 gallons. It can last more than six months before requiring replacement if the chlorine and sediment concentration in your water is low.

The flow of water is decent at around 0.5 GPM, and it’s even faster at higher pressures making it easy and quick to refill large bottles – you can fill eight 8-ounce cups within a minute.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation is simple and doesn’t need any tools. The problem is that the adaptor doesn’t seem to correctly fit all faucet sizes and shapes, leading to leaks and water spraying everywhere.

It can work with standard kitchen faucets, but pull-down, spray, designer, or very compact faucets might not fit. If your faucet utilizes external thread, then the thread will also have to be at least 0.14 inches for the adaptor to fit correctly.

Changing the filter takes some guesswork because there’s no indicator light to let you know it’s time to change it. Finding replacement filters is another issue we noted as several customers mentioned that they are not available in most local and online stores.

The major advantage is that the entire unit is constructed using a strong 304 stainless steel material. It’s very solid and durable – it won’t crack or break easily like the other faucet filters made of plastic. Besides that, the unit can swivel 360 degrees, so you can easily get it out of the way when you want to wash utensils.

Generally, if you want something a bit more resilient, this Engdenton’s faucet filter is an option you can consider.  It’s also a good option if your primary concern is bad tasting water since its filtration is very basic and only effectively removes chlorine and sediments.

5. DuPont WFFM350XCH Faucet Water Filter

DuPont WFFM350XCH Electric Metered 200-Gallon Deluxe Faucet Mount Premium Water Filtration Filter,...
  • Easy-to-read electronic display shows how many gallons faucet water filter has cleaned; helps measure filter life
  • Ultra performance filtration improves; taste, odor, and clarity of your water
  • Includes filter which reduces sediment, chlorine, cycts, lindane, benzene, asbestos, mercury and lead

  • Effective filtration that removes numerous contaminants
  • Filters water up to the full capacity without failing
  • Simple to install, operate and change the filter
  • Attaches to most standard kitchen faucets
  • Digital filter life meter that displays the filter life
  • It comes with a long 4-year limited warranty

  • Not recommended for filtering well water
  • Water flow slows down significantly with time
  • The display screen is sometimes dim and unclear
  • The plastic adapter tends to break and leak

Filtration Performance

The DuPont WFFM350XCH features a relatively efficient filtration process that gets rid of various common water contaminants. The main filtration media is an advanced carbon block media and clears out chlorine (taste and odor), cysts, heavy metals (lead and mercury), sediments, asbestos, and organic chemicals such as lindane and benzene.

Users did attest there’s a significant improvement in the taste and smell of the water. Unfortunately, you can only use it on municipal water. The carbon block is not effective against bacteria, viruses, and other impurities found in well water. However, the built-in cartridge has a special antimicrobial coating that helps prevent bacterial growth.

Capacity and Flow Rate

The filter offers a filtration capacity of 200 gallons, which lasts at most four months. The good thing is that, unlike the Culligan FM-15A, you get to use the filter to its full capacity. It doesn’t stop working unexpectedly.

The water flow is a bit slow compared to the rest, and it slows down even significantly after processing more than 50 gallons of water, making it tedious to fill up large bottles or pitchers.

Installation and Maintenance

Installing the filter is not challenging. Two metal faucet adapters and two washers are provided, and they fit comfortably onto most standard kitchen faucets apart from pull-down faucets.

Operating the filter is equally simple. There’s a water flow selector that lets you choose either filtered or unfiltered water without straining. The whole unit also mounts horizontally, and it has a closely packed shape, which leaves enough space under the sink to fit large pots comfortably.

The other advantage is that it’s equipped with a digital filter life meter which monitors and displays the actual amount of water processed by the filter. It’s quite a useful feature that provides a more accurate way of knowing exactly when to get a replacement filter.

The meter comes with a lifetime battery too, so you won’t have to worry about battery replacements. Reading the display is, however, a bit tricky as it’s sometimes dim and unclear.

There were numerous complaints of leaks too. The unit uses a plastic faucet adapter that can break when you apply a lot of force while screwing it in place. It also tends to crack or expand if water pressure is too high, resulting in leaks around the connection points.

Overall, the DuPont WFFM350XCH is a great option for filtering moderately contaminated city water that contains lead, cysts, chlorine, and some organic chemicals. It’s equally great if you want a faucet filter that allows you to track the filter’s life easily.

  • Removes 60 different contaminants, including 99% of lead
  • Improves the taste, odor, and appearance of water significantly
  • Easy to install and fits most standard kitchen faucets
  • Filter replacement is simple and has a filter life indicator
  • Backed by a 1-year warranty

  • Filter doesn’t last as long as specified
  • The water flow is low and not streamline
  • The twist knob is hard to turn and breaks easily
  • Build quality is poor, and it’s prone to leaking

Filtration Performance

The Brita 35214 is a basic faucet filter, but it performs much better than other similar models when it comes to removing contaminants from the water. The filter is certified against NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53 as well as 401. It removes lead (99%), asbestos (99%), particulates (99%), and over 93% of VOCs, including benzene, lindane, TTHM, and atrazine.

It also clears out 99% of giardia and cryptosporidium cysts, 97% of chlorine (taste and odor), BPA (99%), and more than 30 other contaminants. It’s a thorough filtration process, and the water produced tastes great and has no foul smell.

Capacity and Flow Rate

The filtration capacity is low at just 100 gallons, and while it’s specified to last four months before replacement, it barely lasts that long. Users reported that it clogs quickly and only lasts for around two months or less if there’s very high sediment in the tap water.

The flow rate is disappointing too. Many complained that the filter significantly reduces the water flow on both sides, and it continues to drop drastically with time such that it’s too restricted to wash dishes and take minutes to fill up a glass or bottle.

Moreover, the flow isn’t streamlined – the unfiltered side sprays water in a random direction while the filtered side produces shower sprays, which causes the filtered water to end up outside the water bottle.

Installation and Maintenance

The Brita 35214 is easy to install, and it attaches to most standard kitchen faucets. The only faucet styles it doesn’t fit are pullout and spray faucets. Replacing the filter is not challenging either, plus the unit has a built-in filter life indicator to signal when replacement is needed.

Operating the unit was challenging for most people. The twist knob for switching between the filtered and regular tap water is a frail plastic, and it has a stiff valve that makes it very difficult to turn it all the way – it can break, or the entire attachment comes off when a lot of force is used to switch it.

The whole unit is not durable either. The thin plastic material used to make it degrades after a year or two of use (especially when exposed to the sun) and eventually cracks or breaks, causing water to start leaking.

All in all, this Brita 35214 faucet water filter worth checking out if your tap water is usually densely contaminated and you want an affordable filter that can effectively clean it up.
